We either use cutting cords or transmission cords inserted in frangible joints.
Also called expansion tubes, a detonating cord inserted in flat hollow tube will operate with very controlled external effects and be harmless for upper parts equipement of the launcher such as its payload.
What would be the technological innovations for next generation launchers inter-stage separation?
Inter-stage separation could be ensured with separation nuts – quantity and modulus to be adapted to the stage diameter (we have different sizes of separation nuts off the shelf).
They are one hundred percent tight and have very limited external effects too.
If reusability is required, our separation nuts do not need to be Pyro, they could be coupled with a cold gas actuation « actuated by pressurized gases».
