Pyrotechnics: Principle and Applications for Aeronautics

The principle of a pyrotechnic chain is simple

The chain performs a signal transmission along pyrotechnic lines and simultaneously the transport of energy necessary to perform what is called the terminal function.

Most applications, where pyrotechnics comes into play, relate to emergency situations.

Let’s consider a few virtuous combinations between emergency situations and pyrotechnics solutions:

A first example is the emergency door opening. In that case, a pyrotechnic actuator will secure a reliable and instantaneous action for evacuation.

Another illustration is the military aircraft emergency landing. The pilot can actuate, from his seat, a dedicated pyrochain leading to the release of an external fuel tank for example.

In case of a fighter jet crash, the pilot can also actuate a pyrotechnic canopy severance or ejection system before his own ejection.

A last example could be an UAV loss of control. A Flight Termination System will be actuated to interrupt the mission.
