THE MILLISECOND ORDER: Pyroalliance featured on the occasion of the centenary of the Hyères Naval Air Base (BAN)

If we were to rank the arts that require perfect mastery and highly specialised skills, pyrotechnics would certainly be at the top of the list. A cutting-edge technology deployed aboard submarines, ships, aircraft, space launchers, and even in industry to ensure critical or emergency functions, within a timescale of around a millisecond. The masters of this field have a name: Pyroalliance!

Our daily life

You have certainly already heard of “the millisecond order”

It is obviously the notion of an infinitesimal duration, that interval which means everything tips in less time than it takes to say it.

At Pyroalliance, this millisecond represents far more than a notion.

One might even believe that this “order” is a distinction, like the Order of the Legion of Honour or the National Order of Merit, so much do the precision, exactness, finesse and meticulousness it evokes sum up the company’s unique identity.

We are talking about precision pyrotechnics. We design, manufacture and ensure the operational readiness of systems based on energetic materials that tolerate no malfunction.

Fabien Cristoforetti Director of the Toulon facility

Once you understand the use, you quickly grasp what is at stake for Defence

“These are high-tech mechanical and pyrotechnic components,” the specialist explains.

“They range from systems for weakening a fighter aircraft canopy to devices for separating the stages of a rocket!”

Particularly valued in the Defence sector, these systems equip the iconic Rafale aircraft and Ariane rockets.

Their components can also be found on missiles, warships and even submarines, for example to release ballast.

“Pyrotechnics provide the speed, precision and reliability that enable our customers to control the key moments of their missions,” says Fabien Cristoforetti.

“For our armed forces, having equipment manufactured by a French company is also a guarantee of sovereignty!”

ArianeGroup subsidiary Pyroalliance shares the same challenges.

“We only have 250 employees,” the director humbly acknowledges.

“Nevertheless, we see that our expertise is highly valued and fully meets expectations in space programmes.

For ArianeGroup, we are more than an SME-sized subsidiary; we are a signature they rely on!”

Spread between the Toulon site, next to the naval base, and the Mureaux site in the Paris region, Pyroalliance makes no secret of its pride in serving its customers’ interests while sharing in their successes.

“We watched the first Ariane 6 launch live via a duplex link,” Fabien recalls. “I can assure you it was a great moment, and pride could be seen on every face!”

In 2024 alone, activity grew by more than 30%.

A passion that also applies to the industrial sector

Because pyrotechnics offer several advantages:

In particular, for triggering the ultra-fast opening or closing of valves.

And for benefiting from sealed devices down to a depth of 6,000 m:

  • bolts.
  • shackles.
  • nuts.
  • pyrotechnic cutters.
  • severing devices.

Or to ensure anti-intrusion protection and the marking of equipment used to transport and destroy currency.

“There are many applications,” the specialist assures us.

“We design and develop systems that provide reliability and safety while also offering long-term capability.

We are also very active in security.

For example, in automatic inflation systems (cartridges and perforators) for life jackets and life rafts.

Or helicopter flotation systems, which must remain reliable over time so they work perfectly when the moment comes.”

And the company skilfully combines the expertise of engineers with the experience of former military personnel.

It also invests in training and mentoring to ensure that young graduates are perfectly integrated, while building ties with schools to prepare for the future and meet the strong growth of recent years.

In 2024 alone, activity grew by more than 30%, thanks mainly to innovative solutions, but also to their strong investment in research and development.

“There is still a great deal to create,” says Fabien Cristoforetti. “We are developing systems that can have many applications, both in civil industry and for the armed forces.”

Since its beginnings in 1956, and the 1997 merger of Pyroméca and PyroSpace, Pyroalliance has stood out by initially equipping jet-powered drones. The SME quickly moved upmarket to become one of Europe’s leading companies today.

It is by cultivating respect and trust, but also anticipation, simplicity and a focus on customer satisfaction, that we have come this far today. And it is not over!

Pyroalliance, a 100% French company

In the current geopolitical context, being able to rely on a 100% French company such as Pyroalliance is a guarantee of security.

For the nation as well as for the people who work there.

“We attach great importance to ensuring that people feel good at work,” says the director of the Toulon site. “We work with hazardous materials, on high-precision mechanical components. Safety is one of the priorities at our facilities.”

In another area, we also aim to become a leader in the field of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility).

Working on iconic programmes

Being at the heart of current events, ensuring the critical functions of high-tech equipment, all while facing the particularity of being unable to perform the ultimate test of its equipment (at the risk of consuming its charge).

Pyroalliance demonstrates extraordinary abilities every day, responding to every delicate situation.

Whether it involves a gram for an explosive cord or several kilos of propellant for a space launcher, they provide a service like no other.

So if the “Millisecond Order” existed, we can be certain that Pyroalliance would be its grand chancellor!
